PROF ZACHARY WHINNETT
SPECIALTY: General Cardiology & Electrophysiology
CLINIC TIMES: Friday 9am - 5pm
BACKGROUND &
EXPERIENCE
Professor Whinnett is a cardiologist with special interests in pacing, heart rhythm disturbances, and heart failure. He performs ablation for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias and implantation of pacemakers, including cardiac resynchronisation devices, conduction system pacing, and defibrillators.
Prof. Whinnett practices with HCA Healthcare UK and at Imperial College NHS Trust, where he works principally at the Hammersmith and St Mary’s Hospital sites. He is Professor of Cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute Imperial College London, where he leads a research program aiming to develop improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm problems.

TEACHING
Prof. Whinnett is an international expert and teacher in the field of cardiac pacemaker implantation and treatment of heart rhythm problems, regularly training cardiologists from around the world, and is frequently invited to present his work at international scientific meetings.
He leads the research program in implantable cardiac devices at Imperial College London. His groups work includes:
-
Development of high precision haemodynamic methods for assessing pacemaker and Implantable defibrillators
-
Investigation of conduction system pacing – which is a new method for delivering pacing therapy, which aims to deliver more efficient activation of the heart compared to standard pacing
-
Development of new methods for diagnosing heart rhythm disorders
Prof. Whinnett has published around 200 papers in international scientific journals and has supervised multiple Ph.D. students
